The SIL4 Point Machine Controller represents a significant step forward in rail speed management. Designed to offer high safety and precision, this advanced system guarantees reliable train speed management, being certified to the SIL4 standard. In this article, we will explore the main features and benefits of this innovative technology, which not only improves operational efficiency, but also contributes to safer and more sustainable rail transport.
Description of the Point Machine Controller
The Point Machine Controller, also known as the Analog Speed Set Pointer, is an innovative solution designed by Eletech, the Head of the International Design Centers of Elemaster, R&D division of the Group, to enable precise speed control of rail vehicles. Using a rotary encoder, it allows drivers to set the desired speed precisely and validate it via a confirmation button integrated into the train’s Driver Desk. This approach not only simplifies daily operations, but also reduces the risk of errors, improving the overall safety of the rail vehicle.
Operation and Main Features
The Point Machine Controller operates with two electronic boards in a metal enclosure, powered by a 110V system battery. The speed setting signal is transmitted as a 4-20mA current signal, ensuring clear and precise communication with the train’s speed management system. This device is designed to meet stringent safety and reliability standards, incorporating a number of advanced features to ensure optimal performance.
Key features of the Point Machine Controller include:
- SIL4 safety architecture according to EN 50129.
- Hardware design conforming to EN 50155 for railway equipment.
- EN 50657-compliant software design for on-board railway vehicles.
- Fail-safe architecture.
- FMEA calculation based on IEC 62380.
- IP55-rated enclosure
- Four relay outputs.
Innovation and Sustainability in the Project
Eletech developed this system with a strong commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability. The design of the Point Machine Controller followed the Ecodesign guidelines and allows easy maintenance and upgrading, extending the product’s life cycle and minimising electronic waste. The dual-channel safety architecture and the use of advanced technologies guarantee not only a high level of safety, but also optimised operational efficiency.
Test and Verification
To ensure reliability and compliance with safety standards, the Point Machine Controller underwent numerous rigorous tests, including Hardware in the Loop (HIL) bench functional tests, type tests and fault injection tests. A code coverage analysis ensured that all parts of the software had been tested, minimising the risk of failure and ensuring optimal performance under all operating conditions.
Advanced solutions for the highest level of safety in the railway world
The Point Machine Controller represents a significant advance in railway safety and operational efficiency. Its carefully thought-out design and use of advanced technology testify to Eletech’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the railway industry.
The ongoing commitment to introducing state-of-the-art solutions confirms the Elemaster Group’s role as an industry leader, contributing to an increasingly safe and sustainable railway transport.
